Established & Sons | Made in Britain

_

Established & Sons was founded in 2004 by publisher Alasdhair Willis of wallpaper* magazine fame(above). He sought the talent of his art school chums in an effort to create designer furniture which is truly British.

Willis always wanted to start a design company and was tired of seeing good British talent going to Italy and the United States due to no real platform for them at home, in the UK.

Designer Sebastian Wrong, Tamara Caspersz the PR Guru and design director Mark Holmes are the other creative minds behind Established & Sons.

Through friends of friends, Willis was introduced to Angad Paul the CEO of Caparo group, a manufacturer of steel and automobile products, based in the midlands. Paul agreed to become the companies sole manufacturer and chief financial investor.

The Aqua table, designed by Zaha Hadid, was sold at auction in New York for nearly $300,000. The money was used to cover the tooling costs of more affordable products, such as the Fold lamp by Alexander Taylor.

Willis told I.D. magazine:

“We want to live and die by the diversity of what we do. What we have going for us is that we belong to no particular school or -ism. We’ve got to push back a lot of boundaries and build our brand equity. We’ll continue to work with our existing designers, and bring new ones in as and when we need them. This is not just a commercial thing. It’s based on long-term relationships.”

Allison of Inform Seattle captured a quick video of the Established & Sons party in Milan, earlier this year.

Established & Sons reminds us that modern design can be fun – strong, clean lines and bright colours help to separate them from the herd as well as reinforce the brand’s sense of playfulness. They may be a young company but clearly, they are here to stay.
